GMAT Full Form, and What the Focus Edition Changed
GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. See the three sections of the Focus Edition, the 205 to 805 scale, and why old scores cannot be compared.

Key takeaways
- GMAT stands for the Graduate Management Admission Test, owned and run by GMAC.
- The exam has three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, at 45 minutes each.
- Total testing time is about 2 hours 15 minutes, down from roughly three and a half hours on the older format.
- Scores run from 205 to 805 in 10 point steps, and always end in a 5. Each section is scored from 60 to 90.
- All three sections now count equally towards the total, which was not true before.
- You cannot compare a Focus Edition score to an old GMAT score directly. GMAC publishes concordance tables to compare performance across the two scales.
- The essay, sentence correction and geometry are gone. Data Sufficiency moved into Data Insights.
- Scores stay valid for five years, and you can review and edit a few answers within each section.
What GMAT stands for
Graduate Management Admission Test. It is owned by the Graduate Management Admission Council, a non profit association of business schools, and is used for admission to MBA and specialist management programmes worldwide.
In India it matters on two fronts. It is the standard test for applying abroad, and a growing number of Indian programmes accept it alongside or instead of CAT, particularly for one year and executive formats.

What the Focus Edition actually changed
GMAC replaced the older format with the GMAT Focus Edition, and the changes go well past a shorter paper. Since July 2024, GMAC has used the name GMAT Exam for this format. Focus Edition remains useful when comparing it with the older test.
| Feature | Older GMAT | Focus Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | Quant, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing | Quant, Verbal, Data Insights |
| Total time | Around 3 hours 30 minutes | Around 2 hours 15 minutes |
| Score scale | 200 to 800, ending in 0 | 205 to 805, ending in 5 |
| What counts in the total | Quant and Verbal only | All three sections, equally |
| Essay | Scored separately | Removed |
| Data Sufficiency | Inside the Quant section | Moved to Data Insights |
| Changing an answer | Not allowed | A limited number of edits per section |
The score scale change is deliberate and worth understanding. Scores on the new exam end in a 5 precisely so that nobody mistakes one for an old score. GMAC redesigned both the scale and the distribution behind it, which means the two sets of numbers are not translatable by arithmetic.
Why a 675 is not a drop from a 720
This causes real anxiety. GMAC's January 2024 concordance table placed an old-format 720 alongside a Focus Edition 675. That is a dated comparison, not a permanent conversion formula: use the latest GMAC concordance when comparing scores.
Aim by percentile, not by the raw number you remember from an older article or an older sibling. Business schools receive both kinds of score during the overlap period and read them against their respective percentile tables.
The three sections
| Section | Questions | Time | Score range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | 45 minutes | 60 to 90 |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 | 45 minutes | 60 to 90 |
| Data Insights | 20 | 45 minutes | 60 to 90 |
| Total | 64 | 2 hours 15 minutes | 205 to 805 |
Data Insights is the section to take seriously. It absorbed the old Integrated Reasoning questions and gained Data Sufficiency from the Quant section, and unlike Integrated Reasoning, which sat outside the headline score, it now contributes a full third of your total.
Candidates working from older preparation material routinely treat it as a warm up and discover too late that it carries the same weight as Quant. Sentence correction has gone from Verbal and geometry from Quant, so a chunk of what older books drill is now irrelevant.
Two features that change how you sit the paper
You choose the order of the three sections. Candidates who fade in the final 45 minutes can put their weakest section first, which is a real strategic lever and one most people never think about until the test centre.
You can flag questions and edit a limited number of answers within each section. The exam remains computer adaptive, so the difficulty of what you see responds to how you are doing, but the old rule that an answer was final the moment you confirmed it has gone. Reviewing costs time, and the editing allowance is small, so it rewards planning rather than second guessing everything.
Who can take it, and how often
There is no formal eligibility bar beyond age and identification requirements, so no specific degree or percentage is needed to sit the exam itself, though the programmes you apply to will have their own conditions.
Scores are valid for five years. There are limits on how often you can retake the exam within a 12 month period and across a lifetime, so check the current rules on mba.com before planning a sequence of attempts.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of GMAT?
Graduate Management Admission Test. It is run by the Graduate Management Admission Council and used for admission to management programmes worldwide.
What is a good GMAT Focus Edition score?
It depends entirely on the programmes you are targeting, and the honest answer is to work from percentiles rather than raw numbers. Scores on the Focus Edition sit lower than equivalent old GMAT scores despite representing the same performance.
Is the GMAT Focus Edition easier than the old GMAT?
It is shorter and has fewer sections, but the content is different rather than lighter. Data Insights now carries a third of the total score, which makes the exam harder for candidates who ignore it.
Can I compare my old GMAT score to a Focus Edition score?
Not directly. Both the scale and the distribution changed. GMAC publishes a concordance, and the reliable comparison is percentile to percentile.
Can I change an answer on the GMAT?
Yes, within limits. The Focus Edition lets you flag questions and edit a small number of answers in each section, which the older format did not allow at all.
