How to use the calculator
- Count your marks with the official answer key. For MCQs, a wrong 1-mark answer costs 1/3 mark and a wrong 2-mark answer costs 2/3 mark. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking.
- Enter the general-category qualifying marks (Mq) for your paper. The field defaults to the CS 2024 figure of 27.6; replace it with this year's value for your paper when it is published.
- Enter the mean marks of the top 0.1% of candidates in your paper, or of the top 10 if fewer than 10,000 appeared (Mt).
- Read your GATE score and whether the marks clear the qualifying cutoff you entered.
The official GATE score formula
GATE score = Sq + (St - Sq) × (M - Mq) ÷ (Mt - Mq)
- M is your marks out of 100 (normalised first if your paper ran in more than one session).
- Mq is the qualifying marks for the general category in your paper.
- Mt is the mean marks of the top 0.1% of candidates in your paper, or of the top 10 if fewer than 10,000 appeared.
- Sq is 350, the score given at the qualifying marks.
- St is 900, the score given at Mt.
The exact Mq and Mt are published with the results. Until then, use last year's figures as a working estimate.
What score do I need?
It depends on the goal. PSU cut-offs usually sit well above IIT M.Tech cut-offs, and both change every year with the paper's difficulty and the number of vacancies. Use the score to compare against last year's published cut-offs for the places you are targeting.
FAQs
Can my GATE score be more than 1000?
No. Scores are capped at 1000, even if your marks are above the top 0.1% mean.
Why do two people with the same marks in different papers get different scores?
Mq and Mt differ between papers, so the same marks sit in a different place on each paper's scale.
How long is a GATE score valid?
Three years from the date of the result.
