How to use the calculator

  1. Choose Academic or General Training.
  2. Enter correct answers out of 40 for Listening and for Reading.
  3. Enter your Writing band and Speaking band.
  4. Read the four module bands and the overall band.

How the overall band is calculated

The overall band is the average of the four module bands, rounded to the nearest half band:

  • An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band (6.25 becomes 6.5).
  • An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band (6.75 becomes 7.0).
  • Anything else rounds to the nearest half or whole band.

For example, Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 7.0 average 6.25, so the overall band is 6.5.

Raw score to band

Listening and Reading each have 40 questions. As a guide, about 30 correct answers gives band 7 in Listening and in Academic Reading. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band. Exact conversions vary slightly between test versions, so treat the calculator's band as an estimate.

FAQs

What band do I need?

It depends on the university, employer or visa. Many universities ask for 6.5 overall with no module below 6.0; check each requirement, including minimum module scores.

Can I raise just one module?

Some test centres offer IELTS One Skill Retake, which lets you resit one module. Check availability and whether your institution accepts it.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

Most institutions accept scores for two years from the test date.
