IBPS RRB PO Quantitative Aptitude syllabus

See the full IBPS RRB PO syllabus for the exam pattern and other sections.

Forty questions in twenty minutes is the tightest pace set anywhere in banking Prelims. The IBPS RRB Officer Scale I quantitative test gives thirty seconds a question, five minutes less than the reasoning test receives for the same number of questions. The section is separately qualifying, so it cannot be carried by a strong reasoning score. At Mains it returns carrying 50 marks against its 40 questions.

A wrong answer costs one fourth of the marks assigned to the question, which is 0.25 marks at Prelims. The minimum IBPS sets for this test has to be cleared separately. IBPS publishes no topic wise question count.

How to spend the time

At thirty seconds a question there is no recovery from a bad start, so the order of attempt matters more here than in any other banking section. The fast block is simplification, approximation, number series and quadratic equations. These are standalone, formula light and depend almost entirely on arithmetic fluency, and a candidate who knows tables to 20, squares to 30, cubes to 20 and fractional equivalents to one twentieth clears them at two or three a minute.

Data interpretation is where the section is won or lost. Sets on the same paper differ sharply in difficulty, and thirty seconds spent scanning every set before opening one is the cheapest time in the paper. A table based set with clean numbers is worth four marks in two minutes. A caselet with buried ratios can cost five minutes for the same four marks.

Arithmetic word problems sit between the two. They are worth taking when the numbers are friendly and worth leaving when they are not, because the mark is identical either way.

Approximation is a separate skill from calculation and deserves separate practice. Many questions ask only which option is nearest, and candidates who compute exactly are spending time the question never asked for.

Common mistakes

  • Treating this section as a smaller version of the reasoning test, when it has five minutes less for the same 40 questions
  • Opening the first data interpretation set instead of scanning all of them
  • Calculating to full precision on approximation questions
  • Clearing the overall total while missing the sectional minimum for this test
  • Learning formulas without building calculation speed, which is the real constraint
  • Guessing blind across five options at minus 0.25
  • Leaving mensuration and probability untouched on the assumption they rarely appear
  • Expecting to borrow time from reasoning, which the section lock prevents

Frequently asked questions

How many quant questions are in IBPS RRB PO Prelims?

Forty, carrying 40 marks, in a locked 20 minute section.

Why does quant get less time than reasoning?

Reasoning arrives in sets that take longer to decode, so IBPS gives it 25 minutes. The quantitative test runs at thirty seconds a question.

Is there a sectional cut-off for quantitative aptitude?

Yes. The minimum IBPS sets for this test has to be cleared separately, and a strong reasoning score does not compensate.

Is a calculator allowed?

No. All calculation is mental or on the rough sheet provided at the centre.

Is geometry asked?

Only mensuration, covering areas, volumes and surface areas. Coordinate geometry and trigonometry are not part of the paper.

What is the fastest scoring topic?

Simplification, approximation, number series and quadratic equations, because they are standalone and formula light.

How much data interpretation appears?

IBPS publishes no split. Past papers usually carry multiple sets, which together account for a substantial share of the 40 questions.

Is there negative marking?

Yes. One fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for a wrong answer.

Does Prelims quant count toward the merit list?

No. Prelims is qualifying only. Merit is built from the Mains paper and the interview.

How do I practise for a thirty second pace?

Timed sectional papers rather than untimed topic practice, since pace under a locked clock is what is being trained. Try a free IBPS RRB PO mock.
