AFCAT verbal ability in english syllabus

The article separates the official syllabus from topics reconstructed from past papers. EKT is not part of the current AFCAT paper.

The notification calls this section Verbal Ability in English and lists eleven topics under it. Two of them, sentence transformation and homonyms, rarely appear in other graduate level competitive exams, so candidates preparing from a general English syllabus meet them cold. The AFCAT syllabus hub page covers the rest of the paper.

Topics

  • Comprehension
  • Detect Error in Sentence
  • Sentence Completion, or filling in the correct word
  • Synonyms and Antonyms
  • Cloze Test, or filling the gaps in a paragraph
  • Idioms and Phrases
  • Analogy
  • Sentence Rearranging
  • Substitution in a Sentence, or One Word Substitution
  • Transformation of Sentence, complex to simple
  • Homonyms

Analogy sits in the English list rather than under reasoning, which is where most candidates expect to find it. In past papers it has been tested on word relationships rather than on figures.

Transformation of Sentence asks you to rewrite a complex sentence as a simple one while keeping the meaning. Homonyms test words that sound alike and mean different things. Both are grammar school staples and neither appears in most bank or management entrance syllabi.

What is not in the syllabus

  • No essay or descriptive writing
  • No literature, authors or literary criticism
  • No Hindi medium
  • No listening or spoken component
  • No published weighting for any topic

How to spend the time

Vocabulary topics are the quick marks. Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, one word substitution and homonyms are known or not known, and each should take fifteen seconds.

Comprehension takes the longest and is worth doing after the vocabulary items, since there is no sectional timing to force the order.

Work on transformation and homonyms specifically. They are the two topics a general English preparation will leave you short on, and they are the cheapest to fix because the rules are finite.

Error detection rewards drilling the same handful of rules: subject verb agreement, tense consistency, prepositions, articles and parallel structure. Browse the available AFCAT practice papers.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for analogy under reasoning, when the notification lists it under English
  • Skipping transformation of sentences and homonyms because other exams do not test them
  • Starting the section with the comprehension passage
  • Memorising long vocabulary lists rather than drilling the recurring error patterns
  • Guessing blind on synonyms at minus 1 a question
  • Treating cloze test as a vocabulary task when it often tests connectives
