NCLEX-RN health promotion and maintenance syllabus

Health Promotion and Maintenance is one of the two smallest categories on the exam at 6 to 12 per cent, and it is the one with the widest span of human life inside it. The ageing process, pregnancy and newborn care, developmental stages and screening all sit here.

Its size makes it easy to underprepare and its breadth makes that expensive. At the top of its range it is nearly an eighth of the exam. The NCLEX-RN syllabus hub page covers the other categories.

How to spend the time

Maternity and newborn care is the densest ground in this category and the part most often left thin by candidates who trained in other specialties. Antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn all appear.

Developmental milestones repay rote learning in a way little else on the exam does. Questions often give an age and ask what is expected, or give a behaviour and ask whether it is normal.

Screening questions test what is recommended and when, so the timing is as important as the test itself.

Physical assessment technique sits here rather than under Physiological Integrity, which surprises candidates who look for it there. Browse the available NCLEX-RN practice papers.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping maternity content because of an unrelated clinical background
  • Learning milestones loosely when the questions ask for specific ages
  • Confusing health promotion teaching with discharge teaching after acute illness
  • Treating the category as small enough to ignore, when it can be nearly an eighth of the exam
  • Looking for physical assessment technique under Physiological Integrity
